How to Root Moto G5 and Moto G5 Plus

This article will help Moto G5 owners to learn the rooting process of their device. This operation will bring the user endless customization possibilities, from Xposed modules to other enjoyable features such as custom ROMs.

A step-by-step guide:

In order to root a device, it is necessary to unlock the bootloader of the smartphone. In the case of a Motorola Moto phone, the user has to download the latest Motorola USB Drivers for desktop. Then the latest Android SDK tools have to be installed and a Motorola Moto account is needed. The user has to log in, enable USB Debugging and OEM unlocking (this is done by going to Settings). A further step is to Boot the phone into fastboot mode and then connect it to a PC. Type the command fastboot devices into the cmd window and then fastboot OEM get_unlock_datan into the cmd console.

After the bootloader process, the user also needs to install a custom recovery on the device; an example would be TWRP recovery.

Files to download for the rooting process

In order to successfully root the Moto G5 or the Moto G5 Plus, there are several files which have to be downloaded: TWRP recovery for Moto G5 Plus / TWRP recovery for Moto G5, Magisk-v12.0.zip file and the lazyflasher-no-verity-opt-encrypt.zip file.

To install a TWRP recovery on a phone, a computer must be used. The information on the device will be backed up and then the enable USB debugging option on the phone will be selected.

After installing TWRp recovery, the user has to navigate to the Magisk file on the internal storage and swipe it. The head to the Lazyflasher zip file and swipe and flash it. Then the user will tap reboot and then recovery. The next step is selecting “do not install like this” option. After rebooting the Moto G5, a root checker app can be downloaded to verify the process.
