Google’s Pixel smartphone series has a very strange evolution. While high-end models usually have high prices, they do not compare in terms of performance, autonomy and quality of construction with competing models in the market. At the same time, they usually come with the best version of Android, without customizations and exclusive functions, and with some of the best cameras in the industry. However, it seems that Google Pixel 5 will adopt a new strategy: a more affordable price and maybe some improvements.
Pixel 5 and Pixel 4a with 5G could be very similar
Google has already confirmed the existence of Google Pixel 5, but also of the Pixel 4a 5G model. These are to be launched in the near future and will be the first devices equipped with 5G modems of the company. While the Pixel 4a 5G seems to be just a larger version of the recently launched mid-range model, the new Pixel 5 could be a premium mid-range device for the first time.
Traditionally, the Pixel devices in the main range have been high-end models, equipped with the most powerful processors from Qualcomm. This year, however, the Pixel 5 could adopt a Snapdragon 765 chipset, like all other average 5G phones on the market. However, this is both a positive and a negative point. The information comes from Nils Ahrensmeier, a “leaker” who in the past provided real information about mobile devices not yet launched.
First of all, the Pixel 5 will be for the first time a model that will not offer an increase in performance compared to the previous generation. Snapdragon 765 is less powerful in all situations than last year’s Snapdragon 855. However, the phone could come with 8 GB of RAM and 128 GB of storage, a 6 ”screen with an OLED panel with a refresh rate of 90 Hz and two cameras on the back: an ultra-wide and a standard camera, both 12 megapixels . Autonomy could be another improved aspect, with a 4,000 mAh battery and 15W wireless charging. What Pixel 5 loses, in addition to performance, is facial recognition, which is replaced with a fingerprint sensor on the back.
