OneDrive is giving up one of the most popular features among PC users

Although it will still be able to sync files from PC systems, the Microsoft OneDrive cloud storage service will no longer allow files to be uploaded to the cloud at will, and users who wish to do so will have to go through another method.

According to the official announcement, OneDrive will withdraw the functionality that allows the selection of any file to be synchronized in the cloud space, starting with July 31st. Instead, users will first need to add file directories to the sync list, and the files hosted on them will only then be uploaded to the OneDrive storage. Much faster and easier to use in many cases when you want to add a document in the cloud storage space, the alternative was to directly select the file, which is extracted regardless of its location on the hard disk or local network, becoming immediately visible from all devices connected to the same OneDrive storage.

OneDrive is being upgraded

While that functionality can be replicated by standard synchronization by adding file directories for OneDrive synchronization, the old functionality implementation provided immediate access to files without them being uploaded to Microsoft servers.

Microsoft directs users who want to continue to benefit from this functionality to the integrated backup service, which is present under the Windows 10 operating system.

The news of the limitation of functionality comes in the context in which the beneficiaries of Microsoft services for a fee, such as the Office 365 package, already benefit from unlimited storage space, included in the paid subscription. For comparison, in the free version, OneDrive users have only 5GB of free storage, which can be increased to 50GB by paying a monthly fee of 2 dollars.
