LG announces Wing 5G: a slider phone with two screens and “gimbal” camera

LG has finally announced the Wing 5G model, the phone with a 90-degree slider and two screens, about which we have heard in the last few months from rumors. It seems that this model integrates more advanced features than we initially expected, it is also equipped with an unusual camera, capable of providing “gimbal” style footage, with stabilization and panning functions in four directions, even if it integrates only fixed cameras.

The LG Wing 5G comes with an average configuration, but an out-of-the-ordinary design

Like the Velvet 5G model, LG’s new unusually designed smartphone is a premium mid-range device. Thus, it is equipped with a Snapdragon 765 chipset, 8 GB of RAM and 256 GB of internal storage. The phone also has a microSD slot, a 4,000 mAh battery and a retractable front camera at the top. In fact, the design of the phone would not allow the integration of a camera in the upper corner of the screen or even in the center, because the main screen rotates 90 degrees through a slider system.

It positions the main screen at the top of the device horizontally, revealing a more square secondary screen at the bottom. The main screen has a diagonal of 6.8 ”and is recommended for consuming multimedia content, while on the secondary screen extra information, control buttons or a separate application can run.

Unlike other two-screen devices in recent times, the LG Wing does not seem to be productivity oriented. The scenarios proposed by LG in use are to display a car navigation application on the main screen and a music application on the secondary screen, or to run a racing game on the main screen and display the circuit map on the secondary screen. But the most interesting thing is how LG wants to offer new filming options on this device.

The “gimbal” camera is the most interesting new feature

Compared to Vivo, which has integrated a true gimbal system on the X50, LG is trying to offer a similar experience using two ultra-wide cameras. On the back of the phone we have three sensors: a main one of 64 megapixels, wide and two sensors of 13 and 12 megapixels, respectively, with ultra-wide lenses. These two sensors can cover a large part of the visual field together, and the gimbal shooting mode allows a function never seen before on a phone.

Basically, the phone crop in the center of the image and uses both cameras to be able to move the perspective up, down, left or right, without moving the phone. With so much extra perspective, this mode of filming also offers effective electronic stabilization. The ultra-wide sensors appear to be assembled at a 90-degree orientation, so you’ll need to use the phone for ultra-wide shooting in portrait mode, with the screen sliding in the open position.

But the most interesting thing is that the LG Wing looks like a normal phone most of the time and becomes a model with two screens only if you want to use it like that. Of course, it is a little thicker and heavier than other models, but not extremely much. At 10.9 mm thick and weighing 260 grams, it is in tune with other two-screen models on the market.
